I am a graphic designer that wants to learn about the technical information about web hosting, how the internet works, internet databases, various internet progam languages and all sorts of helpful computer tips involving the internet. Any information I find is geared towards people who already possess highly technical programming knowledge- I am sort of lookngi for a dummies book but for those who take it seriously.
I really like visual books or CDs- i work well with diagrams and such.

Well, I like the O'Reilly books myself, but they trend to be technical references for technical people. I was going to recommend "DNS %26amp; Bind", but it's much more detailed than you will ever want to know. You might look at the "Missing Manuals" (See link below)

"TCP/IP Network Administration" By Craig Hunt is a good starting book to learn about how various protocols, servers etc. work. It has "enough" diagrams but I would not call it extremely visually oriented. A dummies book for those who take it seriously is a bit of an oxymoron, you should either be prepared to sit down and learn or resign yourself to looking at cartoon characters explaining the internet as a series of tubes. Nobody said it would be easy!
Reply:I see there is a "DNS For Dummies" By Blair Rampling. Sorry though, I did not read it. I bet you can probably find reviews in Amazon. The reviewers often compare to similar books, so you could find other leads too.

What does it take to build and make money off a new web-site?
If I wanted to build a website like you-tube (for example) what would it take? I already bought the ".com" from "Go-Daddy" and now I want to know the rest of the details such as Web-Hosting, building the site itself and so on ans so on. Also doeas anyone have and Idea of how much money?

Building a site like You-Tube will take some time and money. And for it to be successful, it needs to be You-Tube with a twist. You have to offer something new, or people will just stay with You-Tube, since the whole world has already heard of them.

don't buy any hosting plan yet. cause there is very good one or two web hosting that has free plan available that can host your domain for free and allows unlimited subdomain. and more good news is there is no forces ad or banner to use their service. if you still a beginner use this resources first while learning to make your first website. and when a lot of visitor has come to your website and need more storage then your can upgrade and it cost less then $5 monthly or if you want to host somewhere else you can bring your domain name along cause it is yours.

I want to be able to telnet somewhere that'll give me a Unix shell, with Pine and trn and all the basics like that, and which'll host a web site (domain name mine). The ability to use some extras, like run a majordomo, would be nice but are not critical.
What exactly am I asking for, nowadays? One does not exactly see ads saying "Now, with exciting new trn for improved Usenet access!" ISPs in the area have all been "Shell access? Go away, please," for years.
Any suggestions for companies/ways to phrase what I'm asking for that makes more sense?

Virtual-dedicated is a new technology out there that allows the affordability of a shared server with the useability of a dedicated server. Admin access allows you to have root level access and install and run virtually anything on the server.

I suggest A Small Orange. You can do all those things, including secure shell, and great resources, and it's very, very reasonable (try $25 a year for a tiny account, just $50/year for a small one, which is what I have).
The catch is that compared to other hosts, the storage and bandwidth seem small. But that's a good thing! They don't oversell their shared servers. Watch out for hosts that overpromise and underdeliver.

There is a forum (and it's public -- few hosts will let you look "behind the curtain" and see problems before you pay up) where you can ask questions before and after you sign up. Other members and tech support are very helpful and prompt.

How do I set up a private proxy server on my web server (VPS)?
I have a VPS Server which I use for web hosting, I would like to setup a proxy server for my own personal use. It does not need to strip out my original IP address or allow SSL although it would be a plus.
However, it MUST be private so that only I can use it.

My uncle has a domain name and had a 'friend' take care of the work for him since he has no computer knowledge. I don't have much either :) but do run my own site so I offered him help. His friend is now among the missing and my Uncle has no idea who is hosting the website. Is that something I may find out somewhere?? He can use his domain and have someone else host it. They just transfer the current domain name to the new host. Its not hard to do, he just needs to find whatever website he wants to host his domain name, then he can use that domain name to transfer. There is an option for this at the host website's website.

I am searching for a reliable dedicated hosting company that will be able to meet the needs of my future music site. On my site, users will be able to upload/ download mp3's as well as upload photos. I want to have something looks like the following: It is similar to a mailing-list, except that only me, as the administrator can send out mass-emails to the subscribers, i.e. it is a one way communication. How can I setup my computer at home to access a website I built in school, from outside the home on the Web.?
I built a website in school using Java(JDBC, Servlets .etc). We never really learned how to setup our book website project outside of our laptops. For example, we can pull up our static web page on our laptop and navigate around in it to perform various tasks (i.e. querying book info in an Oracle database, shopping cart, saving book data .etc). I want to have something looks like the following: It is similar to a mailing-list, except that only me, as the administrator can send out mass-emails to the subscribers, i.e. it is a one way communication. The recipients are passive receivers. When the subscribers subscribe to the mailing-list, they will enter some of their personal information. Among the personal information are some key words. These keywords are used for my search. When I send out some emails, I will first search relevant keywords, and send out emails only to those selected recipients...How do I do this? What kind of technical solutions are available to me? I am mostly looking for some existing tools and hopefully the solutions are simple to use -- because I am a green hand and have not been doing web-hosting stuff before. I want to have a web site of my own, but have it only available to me. I want the website to be where i can upload files from another computer(not the computer with the server on it) on the site in order to access them some where else like a meeting of something. I want my computer to host the web page so i don't have to pay the monthly fees of web hosting. I don't want to buy an expensive server just for this purpose. I have a regular internet provider Comcast. Pretend i am computer stupid when answering so it is more clear step by step.

Why is "t" the keyword used to find my web site page?
In Yahoo! web hosting statistics anylizers, it lists the letter "t" as the keyword most often used to get to one of my site pages on Google searches. "t" has nothing to do w/my site nor have i listed it in any of the Page Properties as a keyword. Does anyone have a clue about this bafflement??

Word of advice, web hosting is already a saturated market. Unless you can charge less than $5 per month, provide 1 or 2 GB of drive space, and have a server availability of 99.99%, I suggest looking into another business.

thats not such a good idea, but if you really want to, try dells, they are very reliable.
Reply:not really related, but just a warning in case u didn't know about this. Most regular ISP will not allow you to host a web server from your house. In fact they even block port 80 (which is the default port for the HTTP protocol). You will probably need a tier 1 or tier 2 connection if you want to host anything (or otherwise configure your web server to use another port, but in which case will force the users to type in their url as "www.url.com:portnumber" to connect to the server).
The guy above mentioned Dell, they are decent, but i can't say good, but they are definitively cheap.

Word of advice, web hosting is already a saturated market. Unless you can charge less than $5 per month, provide 1 or 2 GB of drive space, and have a server availability of 99.99%, I suggest looking into another business.

Reply:not really related, but just a warning in case u didn't know about this. Most regular ISP will not allow you to host a web server from your house. In fact they even block port 80 (which is the default port for the HTTP protocol). You will probably need a tier 1 or tier 2 connection if you want to host anything (or otherwise configure your web server to use another port, but in which case will force the users to type in their url as "www.url.com:portnumber" to connect to the server).
The guy above mentioned Dell, they are decent, but i can't say good, but they are definitively cheap.

What would be the point of the JDBC? I guess maybe you can connect to a database elsewhere? But if that's the case, really, how big a deal is it to allow a connection to db along with a web client?

However, I find that the functionality of the Drupal CMS (content managment system) is much nicer, in both features, extendability, elegance of design, and appearance of the themes. But don't take my word for it. Check it out for yourself...

yes it can but you will need a database (mysql or SQL - check with your host) and to be honest I don't think it's worth it because you will never make it big. Search engines don't use meta tags anymore because everyone was putting not related words in their meta tags. If it's something that you want to test and explore than that鈥檚 ok

Why does XP rudely close my web page?
I recently upgraded to Windows XP and moved my web hosting over to Yahoo!. Since that time, weird things have been happening. When I go to my website, I see just the beginnings of it and it shuts down the page AND closes IE. This also happens when I try to open a page such as SiteBuilder from within Yahoo. I have looked closely at the security settings but I see nothing. All other pages and things appear to be functioning as normal. My site is viewable from other machines. Thank you for reading.

I know too many clients with horror stories... they weren't happy with the design, or found out the fee was outrageous, or both, and ended up with their website being hijacked by someone who suddenly turned rude and obnoxious and threatening.
So, people looking to hire designers who might be reading this, take heed... go to the extra trouble to register your domain name yourself. Then sign up for web hosting yourself (again, separate companies). Go with the recommendation of your designer if they have one, but don't give away the root password to the account. Assign the designer their own FTP password for uploading files.

I tried to set up an account with www.happyhost.org, which is supposed to be a free hosting service.
They sent me an e-mail with password etc. I tried to log on and got a response indicating bad password. I tried several times and finally thought I would try 'support'. 'support' turned out to be a blank page. So I tried 'faq'. 'faq' read as follows:

I noted that all their links were advertising - would you believe - various hosting services, but none of them free.

What are the best photo management services/programs for a web site?
I'm looking for a photo management service (or software) that allows me to take advantage of my web hosting plan so that I can use the 2GB of space I've paid for (as opposed to like 20MB of free hosting). Any suggestions on what would organize the photos and save me the HTML time?

Reply:Yea...the web design guy needs access to pretty much everything. Make sure you trust them.

If you have a good ISP with shell access, you may be able to provide him with ssh access instead of ftp. (files can be transferred using sftp) But, this depends on how your ISP is set up. (I actually prefer working with SSH over ftp) this is dangerous and may or may not involve giving him access to your email. (depends on where/how your ISP does things)
The other thing you can do is have the web person design everything on his/her development box and ship you the files, where you install them yourself. This is some-what technical and you may have to pay extra for tech support, but if you don't want them to access your FTP settings, it may be a good idea.
Finally, there are "shell tools" that a person can use to access your account w/out your FTP password. This is kind of dangerous, but you could install it for him/her and then they could use that to upload stuff. (and change file permissions, etc..) depending on the nature of the project, this may take more time. (I've had to resort to this in some cases where I needed shell access on a host that doesn't provide it)
Keep in mind, this person probably doesn't want access to your account any more than you want them to have access. Logging in to someone elses account is really something a professional would prefer to avoid doing whenever possible.
In any event, one thing you absolutely MUST do is change your password BEFORE giving it to this person and then change it back when they're done.
The trick is to change it before giving it to them.
Also, don't send it through email - I've actually seen accounts get compromised by emailing passwords. This is was a serious problem for me, as it actually appeared as though I had compromised the system.
These days, I've opted a policy where I refuse to login to any account that has had its credentials emailed to me.
Change your password first and do NOT send passwords through email channels.

I was wondering where I can get a slideshow like this one?
I am a photographer and I dont know how to aquire a slideshow for my web site.... I would like on pretty simple and easy to operate. I use yahoo as my web host. DoI need to change host? Oh and I really dont want to by any software. I want a slide show kind of like this one.....

The only way to have a slide show is with Dreamweaver, or Flash, which you do have to buy -but they%26#039;re easy programs to use - you don%26#039;t need to change Yahoo as a host -
If you can live without a fancy slideshow you can create your very own web site by using blogger.com or another blogging web site - many illustrators/photogs are using this alternative because it%26#039;s cheaper - you can post your photos on a blog in a gallery format - but make sure that your images are 72 dpi jpg files less than 100 k and no wider than 450 pixels.
IF you can%26#039;t live without a slideshow - take a web design class online, or hire someone who doesn%26#039;t charge very much.

SCAM... ever since the nigeria scam that everyone eventually caught on to, they have to think of something else creative. I didn%26#039;t know it but i had a long lost cousin that died on the lagos expressway in nigeria too. He was a big wig with the oil company and left me with millions. I just write them back and tell them they need to be more creative... lol
