Any information I find is geared towards people who already possess highly technical programming knowledge- I am sort of lookngi for a dummies book but for those who take it seriously.

I really like visual books or CDs- i work well with diagrams and such.

HELP!
Are there any easy to understand books about DNS and other technical web information?
Well, I like the O'Reilly books myself, but they trend to be technical references for technical people. I was going to recommend "DNS %26amp; Bind", but it's much more detailed than you will ever want to know. You might look at the "Missing Manuals" (See link below)
Are there any easy to understand books about DNS and other technical web information?
"TCP/IP Network Administration" By Craig Hunt is a good starting book to learn about how various protocols, servers etc. work. It has "enough" diagrams but I would not call it extremely visually oriented. A dummies book for those who take it seriously is a bit of an oxymoron, you should either be prepared to sit down and learn or resign yourself to looking at cartoon characters explaining the internet as a series of tubes. Nobody said it would be easy!
Reply:I see there is a "DNS For Dummies" By Blair Rampling. Sorry though, I did not read it. I bet you can probably find reviews in Amazon. I suggest to go with a dedicated or virtual-dedicated server. Virtual-dedicated is a new technology out there that allows the affordability of a shared server with the useability of a dedicated server. Admin access allows you to have root level access and install and run virtually anything on the server.

See the Virtual Dedicated hosting offer here http://www.xmlwebhost.com/web_hosting.ph...
Wanted: machine I can telnet to, have shell access on, host web site on, and...? You can do all those things, including secure shell, and great resources, and it's very, very reasonable (try $25 a year for a tiny account, just $50/year for a small one, which is what I have).

The catch is that compared to other hosts, the storage and bandwidth seem small. I don't have much either :) but do run my own site so I offered him help. His friend is now among the missing and my Uncle has no idea who is hosting the website. Is that something I may find out somewhere?? Or is he better off writing off the website and buying another domain? Kind of stinks since this domain is his company name :\ Any Ideas out there?? They just transfer the current domain name to the new host. Its not hard to do, he just needs to find whatever website he wants to host his domain name, then he can use that domain name to transfer. There is an option for this at the host website's website.
Reply:What you need to do is ping the website. You should be able to get an IP for it and then, once you have an IP address, you can find out who owns that IP. The owner of the IP address will be the hosting company. Or, you should simple to go https://secure.registerapi.com/services/... and enter the domain name. At the bottom you'll see the name servers listed and that should also have the company name.
Reply:You should try doing a Who Is search on the domain name. I like using www.domaintools.com, punch in the domain name and once the results come up look at the nameservers. Example: If the nameservers are something like ns1.hostingcompany.com just try going to hostingcompany.com and that is most likly who is hosting the website.
Reply:Try following to look at details of the sites.

http://www.learnwhois.com

plant giftsChahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10489894316027823730noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1221673402862170780.post-88270427623831057212009-04-25T21:31:00.003-07:002009-04-25T21:31:59.536-07:00What is the best website for uploading videos to your web page?which web hosting site make it the EASIEST for you to upload your videos (from a camcorder, cellphone or youtube) onto your own webpage (whether free or not , but the cheaper, the better) ?
What is the best website for uploading videos to your web page?
The more space a webhosting provide, the better for you as those files videos are much bigger than documents.

If you intend to create more than 1 website, go for multiple web hosting where you could handle your websites in one account.

Following webhosting site is quite good.

Hostmonster http://snipurl.com/1512d

They offer hosting of "unlimited domains" and you will get massive webspace of 200000 MB (200 GB ). On my site, users will be able to upload/ download mp3's as well as upload photos. I am not entirely sure what I am going to need in terms of plans, or how many page views(est: %26gt;300,000)/ mp3 downloads I will be getting a month, but know that I want to be on the safe side, and insure that there will not be a server overload, allowing at least several hundred people to access the site at the same time, without it slowing down. Users will be able to preview music as well , and I want to make sure that this function works smoothly without having connection issues due to too much activity at any given time. I am not entirely sure how many users will be uploading music, however, I am estimating that I will have over 50 GB of music on the site. We never really learned how to setup our book website project outside of our laptops. For example, we can pull up our static web page on our laptop and navigate around in it to perform various tasks (i.e. querying book info in an Oracle database, shopping cart, saving book data .etc). But I was trying to setup something at home to leave the computer on at home and somehow connect from work or anywhere outside the home to say http://myBookSite.com. I'd like to do this without setting up an account somehwere elese online that has Web Hosting. I guess I'm trying to figure out how do I setup my own Web Hosting at home.
How can I setup my computer at home to access a website I built in school, from outside the home on the Web.?
For that you have to setup a webserver on your home computer with Java installed in it. The two most used webservers are Apache and IIS. Then you have to buy a domain from a Registrar or directly from the ICANN called mybooksite.com. Next you have to point the DNS of your computer to that of the domain. A wonderful tutorial on how this can be done on a Windows machine can be found here: http://www.ricocheting.com/server/
How can I setup my computer at home to access a website I built in school, from outside the home on the Web.?
Or you can try to go http://www.point2me.com
Reply:http://dhvrm.blogspot.com/2006/04/gettin...

california pomegranatesChahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10489894316027823730noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1221673402862170780.post-67260971540143116252009-04-25T21:30:00.002-07:002009-04-25T21:30:39.881-07:00Does anybody have a technical solution for the following web service?I want to have something looks like the following: It is similar to a mailing-list, except that only me, as the administrator can send out mass-emails to the subscribers, i.e. it is a one way communication. I want the website to be where i can upload files from another computer(not the computer with the server on it) on the site in order to access them some where else like a meeting of something. I want my computer to host the web page so i don't have to pay the monthly fees of web hosting. I don't want to buy an expensive server just for this purpose. I have a regular internet provider Comcast. Pretend i am computer stupid when answering so it is more clear step by step.
Is there a way to use my home computer as a server and be secure(have a login to server on the web)???
Here is what I would do:

1. It's very reliable, we offer great support, tons of features - 2500 email accounts, blogging software, etc. You just tell us what you need, we do installs for you at no extra charge (unless the software requires licensing fees, but we can recommend/install more than enough applications that are free or open source). If so then you can probably use the website builders many web hosting companies offer. If templates are too much of a cookie cutter for you. You can buy a template and have it changed professionaly for as less as $100. About the hosting price, I would say try 1and1.com, they are world wide and reliable, and cheaper than go-daddy (about $2.99). So don't fall into the $125 traps. ;-)
Reply:1%26amp;1 is very simple to use, very reliable. The prices are very reasonable. The recipients are passive receivers. When the subscribers subscribe to the mailing-list, they will enter some of their personal information. Among the personal information are some key words. These keywords are used for my search. When I send out some emails, I will first search relevant keywords, and send out emails only to those selected recipients...How do I do this? What kind of technical solutions are available to me? I am mostly looking for some existing tools and hopefully the solutions are simple to use -- because I am a green hand and have not been doing web-hosting stuff before. Basically, I have no idea about how to set up a server, etc. So I am hoping that there are easy and existing solutions that can help me. Hopefully they are free. I can give up the search part.
Does anybody have a technical solution for the following web service?
Well, I'd try signing up with "FreeForums.org". As administrator you would have the ability to send mass E-Mails to everyone signed up at your forum. If you don't want to actually run the forum part you can just not create any forums, or possibly disable the board all together. You can easily have your members sign up and set it up to look nice with little effort thanks to many presets to choose from. Your domain would be "CUSTOM.freeforums.org", but for around $12.00 (USD) you could upgrade to "CUSTOM.org". Good luck.
Does anybody have a technical solution for the following web service?
Best web hosting services. Most regular ISP will not allow you to host a web server from your house. In fact they even block port 80 (which is the default port for the HTTP protocol). You will probably need a tier 1 or tier 2 connection if you want to host anything (or otherwise configure your web server to use another port, but in which case will force the users to type in their url as "www.url.com:portnumber" to connect to the server).

The guy above mentioned Dell, they are decent, but i can't say good, but they are definitively cheap.

Chahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10489894316027823730noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1221673402862170780.post-34312419562745092682009-04-25T21:27:00.000-07:002009-04-25T21:27:11.882-07:00I need a FREE web host that offers free domains/sub domains The quality's i need are listed below...?Look.
